On March the 13th, the Web turns 20 years old. In the TED talk, Tim Berners-Lee recalls how he invented the World Wide Web twenty years ago. It was a “play project” that his boss let him do on the side. Berners-Lee notes that the original Web was for connecting documents together online, and then argues quite eloquently why the Web now has to evolve from linked documents to linked data.

Of course, that evolution is already well under way. The Web is becoming a massive interlinked computer, and computers need data. As more and more data becomes linked across the Web, the more that it can be accessed, analyzed, and computed. As Berners-Lee says, “Data is relationships.”

The meaning of colour

Color probably has more significance in every day life in India than anywhere else in the world. India is the land of color. Each colour has a significance. A religious meaning too. And there is an occasion for each rang. Apart from these colors, each colour has a finer significance.

Lal or red suggest sensuality. But it also symbolizes purity. It actually rides a thin line between both. Red is worn at weddings. It is also the color of sindhoor and tikkas. Red is about energy and passion. Goddesses Durga and Lakshmi wear red.

This too is a color a bride wears for a wedding. It indicates a bit of chastity and a bit of sensuality. Yellow is the color of Lord Vishnu. Yellow keeps evil away. Yellow attracts a mate. Yellow food can be sacred. Yellow welcomes spring. Farmers may often wear yellow.

That’s Lord Krishna’s color. A deep, tantalizing blue. It is a sacred blue and a color of calm. The chakra at the center of the Indian flag is blue.

Green indicates fertility. Especially in Maharashtra where it is a wedding color. It is an earthy color. And a festive hue. A traditional color and a color of vitality. It suggests happiness and life. Green is a favorite too with Muslims and Parsis.

Saffron is India’s most favorite color. Our flag has a saffron band in it. Saffron is a very holy and sacred color. An auspicious color.

White represent tranquility. Purity too. Hence it is worn at different occasions to suggest purity. It is also associated with death and rebirth.

Black is not a happy color in India. India does not like black. It is about evil and death. Or a penance. A black mark on a child’s forehead keeps evil away. At certain occasions the superstitious do not wear black — not at weddings or births or by the pregnant. Children are not meant to wear black.

Monochromatic DesignMonochromatic design is design with one color. You select a single base color, and then add white and black to it to produce different shades of that color.

How to enhance a developer’s career, skills and competencies model

Start by creating an IT skills grid for each team member.

  • List the individual’s specific skillsCatalog all technical competencies and skills in key areas such as design, HTML, communications, customer service and inter-personal relationship.
  • Define maturity levels—Using a standards system such as the Carnegie Mellon Capability Maturity Model (CMM) , specify current maturity levels for each skill along a standardized spectrum.
  • Identify skills of interest—Ask the individual to specify areas of interest that coincide with what the company will require over the next one to five years.

Work with each staff member to develop an individually customized Action Plan to help them move from their current position on the IT skills grid to their desired one.

  • Establish direction—Make sure that complementary skills are developed which, when combined, represent a clear path toward responsibilities that will be more rewarding to the employee and more valuable to the firm.
  • Define key stages—Design the Action Plan as a road-map—one made up of discrete stages that provide both the individual and the company with logical touch points where progress can be assessed, achievement acknowledged and course corrections introduced.
  • Specify outcomes—Decide how the individual’s progress will be measured. When possible, identify benchmarks. Devise passing grades on standardized technical competency exams or numerical scores based on department peer reviews or internal user surveys.
  • Annualize objectives—Incorporate this information into a career plan supported by mutually agreed upon annual objectives for the employee. Conduct performance evaluations throughout the year. Provide counseling as appropriate. Update the staff member’s career plan, annual plan and objectives, and positioning on the IT skills grid. Use these elements, among others, to assess incentives and other compensation.
